Reviews of the Garmin Approach G5

1. I adore this device. I love to play several courses with blind shots so this unit is very useful. There are
instances when the hazards are ideal for my tee shots and I get into trouble. This saves me the price of lost
balls. I enjoy having the capability to point at a spot and get the distance from where I am in relation to that
spot. I am able to do this for the green as well. When it is a large green, I can at least aim it to front, center,
or back. When I come across a problem and outside the fairway, I like to have the capability to see my proximity
between the green and me. The ability to know where I can be relative to the green and fairway is awesome. I often
add mistakes not being aware how to get back on the right track when I face trouble. Like all GPS devices, this
saves time. I love that it can locate the closest course so it is set to go when I play. In addition I can see
courses that I have not yet played while in the hotel. This unit means that I do not have to look at yardsticks
anymore. I have not tried it in the rain, so I am not sure if it is waterproof, as they say however, I will not
hesitate to use it. The battery lasts for up to 4 rounds during the summer. Have not used it in winter. I have not
tried the score function so that may save energy. I use the alkaline Duracell. I wish this device gets thinner. It
is not too bulky to attach it to my belt while not hitting a club; however, I remove it when I hit the ball. It is
an odd feeling until I get accustomed to it. I would love to see an improved screen as well. My friend has an
iPhone that has a clearer display however, I am not complaining about it. Simply a hope for improvement.
2. I purchased this device as an upgrade to the GolfLogix G8, which is an excellent piece of equipment. I am
very happy with it, but even so a friend has an SG5 and it is excellent too. The only small aspects I would like to
see bettered (in the future) would be that you have to have to navigate through numerous screens to get from
scoring to viewing the course and back (they should have included a function to go back and forth instantly), and
the scoring setup that Garmin/GolfLogix has or smartphones is far superior. The smart phone edition lets you store
stats (fairways hit, greens hit, putts, penalties, sand and more), and I would like to see this included on the
Approach.
Overall, though, this is a great golf GPS, and the ability to acquire measurements to and from any angle on the
course using the touch screen is a great help as you plot your strategy on how to approach each hole.
3. I am enjoying the new Garmin approach. It is simple to read and easy to use. Since my present course scrapped
their GPS’s, I have fallen in love with the Garmin Approach. It provides you with everything you need in a GPS. The
most significant advantage for me is there is no charge involved.
The one large downside is all the courses I have played on are not included on the Garmin Approach. The other
significant issue I notice is how do you download additional course when they are added to the Garmin Approach.
